Electron

A small rocket that carries up to about 300 kg to orbit, built for satellites that want their own ride on their own schedule.

Why it matters

Small satellites often hitch rides on big rockets and go where the main customer goes. Electron gives them a dedicated launch on their own schedule and to their own orbit.

How the technology works

Electron is a carbon-composite rocket powered by Rutherford engines whose propellant pumps are driven by electric motors and lithium polymer batteries. It launches from Launch Complex 1 in Mahia, New Zealand, and Launch Complex 2 at Wallops Island, Virginia.

A kick stage places satellites in circular orbits.
