LightPort

A receiver under 3 kg that mounts on a lander, rover or mining machine and turns Volta's laser beam into electricity, with leftover heat helping it survive the cold.

Why it matters

Customers need a light, cheap receiver for power beaming to be worth buying. Flying one on a commercial lander is the first step to proving it on the Moon.

How the technology works

LightPort is a photovoltaic receiver; Volta's CEO says about 45% of delivered light becomes electricity. Volta has beamed power to one on a Canadensys rover on Earth, and a smaller version, funded by the Canadian Space Agency, is set to fly on Firefly's Blue Ghost 2 to test converting sunlight.
