Tomorrow.io microwave sounder satellites

Toaster-sized satellites that measure temperature, water vapor and rainfall through the atmosphere, data that feeds Tomorrow.io's forecasts.

Why it matters

Temperature, moisture and rainfall readings feed weather models. Small, inexpensive sounders can refresh those readings more often, including over regions that have little weather data today, such as parts of Africa and Asia.

How the technology works

The satellites measure natural microwave signals from the atmosphere to estimate air temperature, water vapor and precipitation. Tomorrow.io said its first two sounders were in orbit at about 340 miles after an August 2024 launch.

In February 2026 it said its first fleet had 13 satellites and refreshed global readings about every 60 minutes.
