HummingSat

A geostationary communications satellite of about 1,000 kg, much smaller than conventional ones, for operators that want their own capacity without buying a full-size satellite. The first launch is scheduled for 2027.

Why it matters

SWISSto12 says HummingSat takes two to three years to build, so operators can add capacity over one region or replace aging satellites without a huge bet. Viasat ordered three for its Inmarsat L-band network, and Intelsat ordered one.

How the technology works

HummingSat carries more than 200 kg of payload with about 2 kW of payload power, and uses electric propulsion to raise itself to geostationary orbit. It is designed for a 15-year mission.

ESA member states committed EUR 73 million in January 2026 to help develop and industrialize it.
