Hall-effect thrusters (LEOBEAR, Moonranger, Marsranger)

A line of electric thrusters from Pulsar Fusion, sized from 500 W for small satellites up to 10 kW for bigger deep-space craft. This is the company's revenue business today.

Why it matters

Electric thrusters use far less propellant than chemical ones, so satellites can carry less fuel and last longer. Selling them funds Pulsar's longer-term fusion engine work.

How the technology works

A Hall-effect thruster uses electric and magnetic fields to ionize a gas such as xenon and accelerate the ions out the back, producing small but very efficient thrust. Pulsar lists three sizes: LEOBEAR at 500 W, Moonranger at 5 kW and Marsranger at 10 kW.
