GYEONGGISat-2A

South Korea's first methane-monitoring satellite, built by Nara Space in a Gyeonggi Province climate satellite project and launched in October 2026.

Why it matters

It gives a Korean province its own tool to find methane sources and support climate and environmental policy. Nara Space says it is the world's fourth methane-monitoring microsatellite, after ones from Canada, Spain and France.

How the technology works

A hyperspectral sensor splits reflected sunlight into fine wavelength bands. Methane absorbs light at specific wavelengths, so dips in those bands reveal emission sources.

Gyeonggi Province and Seoul National University's climate lab are partners in the project.
