STARGATE optical ground station

Optical ground station that links laser-communication satellites to networks on the ground, using adaptive optics to cope with the atmosphere.

Why it matters

Laser downlinks only pay off if there are ground stations able to catch them reliably through moving air.

How the technology works

The station uses adaptive optics to correct for the distortion the atmosphere adds to a laser link, and connects space-based networks to networks on the ground. MBRYONICS' ground station test bed was picked to verify HydRON links on the ground.
