Hybrid engine for launch vehicles

A scalable hybrid rocket engine that Letara is developing to sell to launch vehicle makers, using a solid plastic fuel and a separate oxidizer.

Why it matters

Plastic-based hybrid fuel is safer to handle than the more explosive fuels many engines use. Selling engines gives rocket makers an option besides building their own.

How the technology works

The engine burns HTPB, a plastic-based fuel, with an oxidizer stored separately, using Letara's own ignition and thrust control technology. A hot-fire test in 2025 produced 5,000 N of thrust.

Letara says the design scales to different missions and that it plans to build its own vehicle eventually.
