REACCH

KMI's capture system for grabbing objects in orbit that were never designed to be caught, such as dead satellites and other large debris.

Why it matters

Most debris has no docking port or handle. A grappler that can hold arbitrary tumbling shapes is the missing piece for removing it, and for moving satellites whose owners did not plan for servicing.

How the technology works

REACCH is an agnostic in-space grappling mechanism, developed with the University of Southern California under a Space Force STTR Phase II. KMI plans to fly it on its Laelaps spacecraft.
