OB-1 (Orbital Baguette One)

HyPrSpace's planned orbital microlauncher, using hybrid engines to put up to about 235 kg into low Earth orbit. A first orbital test is planned after Baguette One.

Why it matters

HyPrSpace argues hybrid engines are simpler and cheaper than liquid engines while performing better than solid motors, giving Europe its own low-cost route to orbit for small satellites. CNES is backing OB-1's development and first launches.

How the technology works

OB-1 scales up the hybrid engine flown on Baguette One, burning solid plastic fuel with liquid oxygen. The company says its CNES R2D2 contract, worth about 50 million euros, calls for five launches with payloads up to 235 kg to low Earth orbit.
