S2 autonomous dual robotic arm

A 1.5-meter robot arm system that GITAI tested outside the International Space Station in 2024 to show robots can do assembly and repair work in open space.

Why it matters

Building and fixing things in orbit today needs spacewalking astronauts, which is slow, risky and expensive. Robot arms that work on their own could make orbital assembly and servicing routine.

How the technology works

The S2 system uses two autonomous arms with swappable tools. It launched to the ISS on a Falcon 9 in January 2024 and completed its demonstration outside the station in March 2024, according to GITAI.
