Alpha

A small rocket in the 1-tonne class that delivers satellites to low orbit. It returned to flight in March 2026 after two mishaps in 2025.

Why it matters

Alpha is the only US-built rocket in the 1,000 kg class to reach orbit, a size that fits single larger small satellites and many defense test missions.

How the technology works

Alpha is a two-stage rocket built from carbon composite and fueled by kerosene and liquid oxygen. Its first stage uses four Reaver engines and the upper stage one Lightning engine.

It launches from Vandenberg in California. An upgraded Block II version is planned, with Lockheed Martin booked for up to 25 Block II launches through 2031.
