Phoenix

A planned ClearSpace servicer that would dock with aging geostationary satellites and take over their steering, adding years of life. First demonstration targeted for 2030.

Why it matters

Geostationary communications satellites often retire because they run out of fuel while their electronics still work. Adding life to them can delay costly replacements, and Eutelsat has signed on as the first operator customer.

How the technology works

The servicer rendezvouses and docks with a client satellite, then provides propulsion and attitude control so the client can keep operating after its own fuel runs low. ESA supports the program, estimated at about EUR 100 million, through its ARTES program.
