Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine (RDRE)

A rocket engine that burns propellant in a detonation wave racing around a ring-shaped chamber instead of a steady flame. Venus claims it is 15 percent more efficient than any earlier rocket engine and pitches it for upper stages, orbital transfer, landers and defense.

Why it matters

Efficiency is the main lever on how much a rocket or spacecraft can carry. If detonation engines deliver their promised gain in a reusable, throttleable package built from standard materials, other vehicle makers could buy more performance without designing a new engine themselves.

How the technology works

In a conventional engine propellants burn at subsonic speed. In a rotating detonation engine a supersonic detonation wave circles continuously around an annular chamber, compressing and burning the propellant as it goes, which raises the pressure gained per kilogram of propellant.

Venus says it builds the RDRE with advanced manufacturing and standard materials and lists throttling and reuse among its benefits.
