Umbra radar satellites

Umbra's radar satellites, which make detailed images of the ground at up to 25 cm resolution in any weather, day or night.

Why it matters

Sharp radar imagery lets analysts identify vehicles, ships and structures even when clouds or darkness block optical cameras, which defense and commercial customers need.

How the technology works

Each satellite sends radar pulses and records the echoes. The spacecraft is agile enough to point forward and backward, which supports long dwell imaging, 25 cm spotlight images and wide off-track scans at 50 cm to 2 m.

Umbra has released bistatic images from satellites flown in tandem and says it has proven formation flying and moving-target detection.
