Starlight solar panels

Space-rated solar panels that Starpath makes in its own factory and sells by the watt, including a very thin, light version called Starlight Air.

Why it matters

Solar panels are one of the costliest parts of a spacecraft. Starpath says it aims to be about 90% cheaper than the industry standard, which matters for satellites today and for power-hungry Moon and Mars bases later.

How the technology works

Starpath builds the panels with automated production in Hawthorne, California. Starlight Classic sells for about $11.20 per watt for flight units.

Starlight Air prints a photovoltaic layer a few hundred nanometers thick onto a fabric backing, weighs about 73 grams per square meter, and sells for about $15 per watt, according to the company.
