Wind Tunnel in the Sky
A flight-test service that straps customer hardware to supersonic F-104 jets so it can be tested in real high-speed air instead of a ground wind tunnel.
Why it matters
Ground wind tunnels typically give only seconds-long runs at high speed. Flying hardware for sustained periods at Mach 2 and above gives defense and aerospace customers longer tests in real air.
How the technology works
Customer sensors or components ride in modular underwing pods, about 3.65 meters long, on the F-104s, which fly at Mach 2 and above while data is recorded. Starfighters lists Lockheed Martin, GE, Innoveering, Space Florida and AFRL as current customers.
