Star Catcher Network

A planned network of power satellites that beam concentrated light to customer spacecraft, which turn it into electricity with the solar panels they already have.

Why it matters

Most satellites are limited by the size of their solar panels. Extra power on demand could let them run stronger radios, sensors or onboard computers without a bigger, costlier spacecraft. The company says it has signed power purchase agreements with satellite operators.

How the technology works

Power-node satellites collect and concentrate solar energy and beam it optically to nearby spacecraft. The receiving satellite needs little or no new hardware because its existing solar arrays catch the beam.

Customers buy power under agreements, much like on a utility grid.
