RED-25

A one-meter, 105 kg reentry capsule in development that can return 25 kg of payload from orbit and steer to a landing under a guided parafoil.

Why it matters

Getting things back from orbit safely is harder than launching them. A small capsule that can return on demand and land on target makes it easier to recover samples, experiments and products made in space.

How the technology works

RED-25 has a reconfigurable payload bay that can be loaded in orbit. After reentry it deploys a guided parafoil to land precisely; SpaceWorks says it could land anywhere in the contiguous US, and it has arranged recovery in Australia with Southern Launch.
