LINA lunar 3D printing
SpaceFactory's work on 3D printing lunar shelters from Moon soil simulant mixed with a polymer binder, tested with NASA in a vacuum chamber at very low temperature.
Why it matters
Building shelters and pads from local material avoids launching heavy construction supplies from Earth, which is one of the biggest costs of a lasting Moon base.
How the technology works
SpaceFactory and NASA Kennedy Space Center printed with a lunar regolith simulant and a biopolymer binder inside a vacuum chamber at about minus 200 degrees C, close to conditions on the Moon. LINA is its design for a printed shelter covered with a thick layer of lunar soil for radiation protection.
The work builds on its MARSHA design, which won NASA's 3D-Printed Habitat Challenge.
