Skylo direct-to-device network
A satellite messaging and data service that reaches standard phones, smartwatches, cars and IoT devices through satellites owned by partners, so users can send texts and SOS messages where there is no cell coverage.
Why it matters
Cell networks cover only a small share of the planet's surface. By using satellites that are already in orbit and the same 3GPP standards that phones already speak, Skylo lets carriers add satellite coverage without launching anything, and lets device makers add it with a software and certification step instead of a special radio.
How the technology works
Skylo runs a cloud-based, 3GPP-standard non-terrestrial network base station and core on the ground. Devices with supported chipsets connect through capacity on partner satellites, and carriers authenticate them through their normal SIM systems.
Skylo said in early 2025 that it covers the whole U.S. and had added Brazil, Australia and New Zealand with Viasat.
In May 2026 Space42 said integration with its Thuraya-4 geostationary satellite was complete, with commercial service to roll out as approvals arrive.
