TESSERAE
Self-assembling tiles that find, dock and rearrange with each other in orbit to form larger structures.
Why it matters
Rocket fairings limit how big a structure can be. Pieces that assemble themselves in orbit could produce antennas larger than a football field, orbital solar farms or other large platforms.
How the technology works
The tiles dock autonomously, correct their own mistakes and can reconfigure into new shapes. They have flown in two orbital demonstrations with NASA, and the company plans to send its fifth-generation system to the ISS.
