Elveo direct-to-device network

A planned network of 320 low-orbit satellites that would let standard phones and devices send messages and data when they are out of reach of cell towers, sold through mobile carriers.

Why it matters

Large parts of the world have no cell coverage. Elveo says it will partner with carriers rather than compete with them, and it holds international rights to 60 MHz of S-band satellite spectrum, with carrier and distribution deals covering more than 60 countries.

How the technology works

Satellites in low Earth orbit act like cell towers in the sky, using spectrum coordinated with partner carriers. Lynk and Omnispace already have nine satellites in orbit.

Light Reading reported that new satellites should start deploying in the fourth quarter of 2027, with commercial service, narrowband at first, planned for early 2028.
