LumirX

Lumir's small radar imaging satellite designed for 0.3 m resolution, the first step toward an 18-satellite constellation.

Why it matters

Radar imaging works at night and through cloud and rain, which optical cameras cannot do. A fleet of its own high-resolution radar satellites would let Lumir sell imaging services, not only supply parts for Korea's government satellites.

How the technology works

LumirX is a synthetic aperture radar satellite: it sends radar pulses and combines the echoes into an image, so it works at night and through cloud. Lumir targets 0.3 m resolution and plans a constellation of 18 ultra-small SAR satellites.

Its earlier Lumir-T1 satellite flew on Korea's third Nuri rocket.
