Shockwave
A planned fully reusable small rocket with a methane engine, built to launch military and commercial satellites on short notice. It is meant to carry 300 to 1,500 kg.
Why it matters
Government and commercial customers want to put satellites up in days rather than waiting months or years for a ride. A reusable small launcher that can be turned around quickly would serve that need at lower cost per flight.
How the technology works
Shockwave is designed so all of its stages are recovered and reused, with a goal of reconditioning, reloading and relaunching in under 24 hours. Its liquid engines burn liquid oxygen and methane; iRocket cites tests of its MACH-i landing engine.
The vehicle has not flown, so reuse and rapid turnaround remain to be demonstrated.
