Iridium GMDSS
Maritime distress and safety service over Iridium's satellites that lets ships send one-button distress alerts, talk to rescue centers and receive safety warnings anywhere, including polar waters.
Why it matters
International rules require ships to carry approved distress communications. Iridium became the first new satellite provider recognized for this system since it was created, and its coverage includes the poles, where geostationary satellites cannot reach.
How the technology works
A shipboard terminal connects to Iridium's low Earth orbit network. One button sends the ship's identity, status and position to rescue authorities, Safety Voice connects the crew to a Rescue Coordination Center, and SafetyCast delivers navigation and weather warnings.
