Moon RACER lunar terrain vehicle

Intuitive Machines' design for an astronaut-driven Moon rover. It reached NASA's design study phase in 2024 but lost the 2026 build contract to Lunar Outpost and Astrolab.

Why it matters

NASA wants an unpressurized rover so Artemis crews can travel far from their lander. Moon RACER was one of three designs NASA paid to study, so its loss narrows the field to two rover makers.

How the technology works

Moon RACER (Moon Reusable Autonomous Crewed Exploration Rover) was designed to carry astronauts and to drive itself. Intuitive Machines' team included AVL, Boeing, Michelin and Northrop Grumman.

NASA paid for a feasibility study but did not select it for the next phase.
