Endurance

A servicing spacecraft designed to dock with an aging geostationary satellite that was never built to be serviced, then keep it in position for about five more years.

Why it matters

Large communications satellites often retire because they run low on fuel while their electronics still work. Adding years of service can be worth more than the mission costs. SES, Hispasat and Eutelsat have signed agreements, and the company's site lists the first Endurance mission for the third quarter of 2028.

How the technology works

Endurance relies on Infinite Orbits' autonomous rendezvous and proximity technology to meet and dock with a client satellite that was not built for servicing. The company's CEO says each mission can add about five years of operation.
