Lunar and Deep Space Communications

Goonhilly's commercial service that uses its large 32 m and 30 m dishes to talk to and track spacecraft at the Moon, Lagrange points, Mars and beyond.

Why it matters

Government deep space networks are oversubscribed, and the wave of private lunar missions needs somewhere to downlink data. Goonhilly was the first privately owned company to sell this service and now anchors Intuitive Machines' ground network.

How the technology works

Goonhilly modified its GHY-6 (32 m, X and S band) and GHY-3 (30 m, X band) antennas so they qualify for ESA's ESTRACK and NASA's Deep Space Network. It has supported ESA missions such as Mars Express and Solar Orbiter, JAXA's Hayabusa2 and tracking of Orion on Artemis I.
