OneWeb

Network of 600-plus satellites about 1,200 km up that sells low-latency internet to ships, aircraft, governments and telecom operators worldwide.

Why it matters

OneWeb is one of the few low-latency satellite internet networks already in commercial service, giving airlines, shipping companies and governments an alternative to Starlink. Eutelsat plans 669 new satellites from Airbus to keep replenishing and expanding the network through 2034.

How the technology works

Satellites fly in 12 synchronized orbital planes at about 1,200 km and relay traffic between user terminals and ground gateways, including a gateway facility in Svalbard. Eutelsat sells the capacity to aviation, maritime, government, enterprise and telecom customers.
