AOBA (ELS-R)

First of ElevationSpace's ELS-R spacecraft: an uncrewed platform that runs research or manufacturing in orbit and then brings the results back to Earth.

Why it matters

Japanese researchers have mostly relied on the ISS for microgravity work. A free-flying platform with its own return capsule gives them a private option as the ISS nears retirement.

How the technology works

AOBA carries payloads to orbit, operates them for the mission, then returns a capsule through the atmosphere for recovery. Payload reports the launch is booked on Isar Aerospace's Spectrum rocket, expected in 2026.
