ION Satellite Carrier

A space tug that launches packed with small satellites and test payloads, then flies each satellite to its own slot in orbit instead of releasing them all in one spot.

Why it matters

Rideshare launches are cheap but drop everyone in the same orbit. ION lets constellation operators place satellites where they need them and start service sooner, and it has flown 26 missions since 2020.

How the technology works

ION has a configurable payload bay that holds dispensers, CubeSats and microsatellites, plus test instruments. After separating from the Falcon 9, its propulsion module changes orbit between releases so each satellite reaches a distinct slot.

Between and after deployments, ION can run hosted payloads and offer edge computing and storage in orbit. On 1 October 2026 D-Orbit flew three IONs on one Transporter-18 launch.
