R-2

A planned reusable medium-lift rocket designed for more than 12,500 kg to sun-synchronous orbit, powered by nine methane engines. First launch is targeted for 2032.

Why it matters

Canada has no rocket of its own that can reach orbit. A Falcon 9-class Canadian rocket would let the country launch large payloads on its own schedule.

How the technology works

The first stage uses nine E-1 engines burning liquid methane and liquid oxygen in a gas-generator cycle, each rated above 725 kN. CRC dropped an earlier plan to build a light-lift rocket first and went straight to medium lift.

It hopes to start testing engine components by the end of 2026.
