Odin
AstroForge's first deep-space probe, sent in 2025 to fly past a metal-rich asteroid. It had communication problems right after launch, and the mission ended when a solar array deployment failure left it without power.
Why it matters
Odin was AstroForge's first attempt to leave Earth orbit and image an asteroid. Lessons from its failure went into the bigger DeepSpace-2 spacecraft.
How the technology works
Odin launched on Feb. 26, 2025 as a rideshare on the Falcon 9 carrying Intuitive Machines' IM-2 lander.
It was meant to fly past asteroid 2022 OB5, believed to be a metal-rich M-class asteroid. The company built this version in-house after an earlier unit failed vibration testing in 2024.
Communication problems began right after separation, and Payload reported the mission was cut short about 530,000 miles from Earth when its solar array deployment system failed.
