Apogeo device-tracking satellites
Planned constellation of about 100 picosatellites, each smaller than a shoebox, that pick up data from remote sensors and relay it within about 30 minutes.
Why it matters
Picosatellites are cheap to build and launch, which could bring the price of satellite IoT down far enough for farmers, water utilities and environmental researchers to use it widely.
How the technology works
Sensors on the ground send short messages to a passing satellite, which relays them to Apogeo's ground segment. In 2022 Apogeo said it would launch satellites in groups of nine, that data from IoT devices could be retrieved within 30 minutes at most, and that it targets continuous coverage by 2027 with about 100 satellites.
Its first nine satellites were in test mode after launch in 2023.
